Heather Gavin

We are extremely sad to announce the passing of our friend and TMT member Heather Gavin. Heather passed away in hospital on Sunday 21st April after a brave battle against a long illness.

Heather loved theatre and music and she played a significant role in the English-Speaking theatre community in Switzerland for many decades. As well as being an active member of Total Musical Theatre, including as President, she was a prominent member of Comedie Nestlé and The Village Players of Lausanne.

Heather will be missed by us all at TMT.  She generously shared her extensive knowledge of stagecraft and was always looking how to learn more. Even over the last few years, as her health declined, Heather brought her wicked sense of humour, her impeccable sense of style and her love of theatre to every meeting, event and performance.

A weekend workshop to remember

On a sunny weekend in September, we were joined by professional Musical Director Sarah de Tute for a wonderful two day workshop on ensemble singing.  It was fabulous to be able to focus on the details of singing that we don’t always have the chance to do at an evening rehearsal.  An hour of warm-ups each morning allowed us to explore our breathing and gave us a physical and mental workout – who knew how hard it was to count to five!

Sarah is a dedicated and talented professional and she kept the atmosphere of the workshop light and fun, so the sessions flew by.  Everyone was given the chance to take solo lines as we worked together on harmonies in a variety of songs from classic and modern musicals. There is something quite magical about coming together with a group of friends and strangers and creating a beautiful harmony.  It is the kind of moments that make the hairs on the back of my neck rise and I left on the Sunday evening exhausted, exhilarated and looking forward to the next opportunity to sing.
